Marine Corps Veteran Receives Donated Roof in Sylmar, California

Mike’s Roofing and Building, Van Nuys, California, has been protecting homes in the San Fernando Valley since it was established in 1972 by Mike Quiroga. Quiroga and his son, United States Marine Corps veteran Anthony Quiroga, are the current owners, and they take pride in their community, often giving back in as many ways as possible. One way Quiroga and his team are able to give back to the community is by participating in the Owens Corning® Roof Deployment Project, which gives back to United States Military veterans.

Through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity® of Greater Los Angeles, California, one Marine Corps veteran was chosen to be the recipient of an Owens Corning roof replacement. The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project is a nationwide effort that aims to inspire, activate, and match its network of independent Platinum Preferred Contractors with military families to deliver and install a free, new roof. By partnering with Support Our Troops®, a nonprofit that is dedicated to showing gratitude to America’s soldiers, Owens Corning and its network of Platinum Preferred Contractors are able to donate roofing materials and labor. Since its inception in 2016, the Roof Deployment Project has helped more than 275 military members receive new roofs.

Owens Corning’s network of independent Platinum Preferred Contractors meets strict standards for professionalism, business stability, and customer service. They are the only contractors that can offer Owens Corning’s best warranty and represent less than 1% of roofing contractors. Mike’s Roofing and Building is honored to be able to participate in this Owens Corning program, as well as the charity aspects of being a Platinum Preferred Contractor.

The homeowner that was chosen to receive the donated roof was United States Marine Corps veteran Wesley Flores of Sylmar, California. The existing roof on his home was old and worn out, and there were multiple layers that were leaking and experiencing wood rot. For the reroof project, Mike’s Roofing and Building installed Owens Corning Titanium® UDL30 Synthetic Underlayment, which uses Sure-Foot™ Technology to create a safer walking surface while also resisting tears and cracks under tough conditions.

Owens Corning TruDefinition® Duration® COOL Shingles were also installed, and they are specially designed to offer beautifully rich colors that reflect the sun’s rays. This is particularly helpful in Southern California, where TruDefinition Duration COOL Shingles contribute to a comfortable and energy-efficient home. The solar-reflecting granules on the shingles can also result in lower energy consumption and an extended roof life. As a Platinum Preferred Contractor, Mike’s Roofing and Building was also able to provide Flores with an Owens Corning Platinum Protection Limited Warranty, the manufacturer’s most-extended coverage available.

“We were in a unique position to help the veteran receive a new roof for the home that he took care of his grandchildren in,” expressed Quiroga. Flores is also a foster parent, and he relies on a safe, dry home in order to continue to help children in the community.
