Honorable Mention for Asphalt Roof Project in Petaluma, California

Every year, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) celebrates low and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects across North America within its Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program. The winners and honorable mentions encompass projects that utilize innovative solutions and complex craftsmanship while promoting the benefits of asphalt roofing systems. This year’s Asphalt Roofing Awards Program presented an honorable mention to Wedge Roofing, Petaluma, California, for one of its reroof projects in Northern California.
In the downtown historic area of Petaluma, a prominent Queen Anne Victorian-style home sits nobly on a corner of the A Street District. Built in 1899 and used by a doctor for his medical practice and home, the large home features an asymmetrical design with an offset entrance.
One of the defining features of a Queen Anne Victorian-style home is its steeply pitched and complex roof, which often features turrets, towers, dormers, and bay windows. For the reroof project, Wedge Roofing removed the existing roofing system and installed a new asphalt shingle roof. They chose GAF Timberline HDZ® RS Reflector Series Shingles. They have a rich, vivid blend of colors that enhance the shadow effect on a roof, giving it a strikingly beautiful aesthetic.
The shingles are incredibly high performing, as they’re designed with Advanced Protection® Shingle Technology, which reduces the use of natural resources while providing enhanced protection. Additionally, Timberline HDZ RS Reflector Series Shingles contribute to potential cooling cost savings for the homeowner. GAF’s Dura Grip™ sealant pairs with the smooth microgranule surface of the shingle’s StrikeZone® nailing area. An asphalt-to-asphalt bond cures for disability, strength, and exceptional wind uplift performance.
The fiberglass asphalt shingles give the Queen Anne Victorian-style residence that wood-shake look, which adds even more character to the stunning home. One unique feature of this home is the unique curvature and ornate features, particularly the turret and lower radius area of the roof. Wedge Roofing was able to cut and modify the GAF asphalt shingles for this project to accommodate these features. This meant that the historic character of the home did not come at a price that sacrificed a high-performing, reliable roof.

A 1922 announcement in the Petaluma Daily Morning Courier described the magnificent dwelling as “one of the most attractive homes in the city.” To this day, the Queen Anne Victorian-style house retains its majesty, and now has an updated asphalt roofing system to keep it safe.
